To me, social work is a daily challenge to myself, finding constructive solutions in certain situations involving a client or a group of clients.

One of the greatest advantages of social work is a strong relationship based on trust with the client and their guardian or family member. If you find the right approach to your client, you can achieve rewarding results. However, if there is no strong relationship of mutual trust between the social worker and the client, the results will not be satisfactory. Today, my client group consists of adults with intellectual and complex disabilities. Most people believe that adults with intellectual and complex disabilities cannot achieve anything new or learn anything. However, I have seen the opposite. There are some clients who learn to sort waste perfectly and even teach others how to do it. There are also those who learn to put dirty dishes into the dishwasher. No matter what new skill a person with a disability acquires in life, it is extremely valuable because learning something new makes them less dependent on staff. In most cases, this gives clients greater confidence in themselves and their abilities. When they see positive results, the clients themselves eventually become motivated and goal-oriented individuals.

The most difficult aspect of social work is burnout, perhaps not even physical burnout, but emotional burnout. When you become emotionally exhausted and apathetic towards your work and your clients, they notice it very quickly. Naturally, such a state of mind in an employee also affects the clients. Therefore, it is very important to assess your own well-being in time and, if necessary, ask for help. I often have to ask for help from colleagues, because they are accustomed to helping others, especially people with disabilities.”

Social Worker Šarūnas Vainius Suchovas: “Society places high expectations on social workers and expects quick results. At the same time, it unjustifiably and undeservedly undervalues the profession itself, its need, and its specialists. I see a paradox here. A social worker strengthens people’s social functioning, provides consultations in a methodical manner, gives information, acts as an intermediary, and represents them. By working in this field and feeling that I am fulfilling my abilities and can continuously learn and improve, my life becomes meaningful.

I am inspired by the support of my colleagues, a creative approach to work, new challenges, and an understanding of how important and necessary the mission we carry out is.

To avoid burnout syndrome, self-awareness, deepening my knowledge and continuous learning help me, as does not allowing failures to discourage me. I try to maintain a healthy daily routine, take care of myself, stay physically active, and avoid ‘bringing’ work-related problems home.”

Social Worker Aurika Lazdauskienė: “I have worked in various fields, but I have always felt that I am very sensitive to other people’s misfortunes and failures. I have always tried to help as much as I could, encouraged and motivated others. I never tried to do for another person what they could and should do themselves; instead, I looked for ways to involve them in activities and other tasks. Of course, after living abroad and returning home, I experienced quite a shock. Since I am a person who likes challenges, I decided that social work would suit me best. I began studying and working in my chosen profession. I am very happy that I found ‘my place’ and that I do the work I love. Fourteen men with intellectual, physical, and complex disabilities live in my unit. I never doubt my abilities because I have university-level knowledge (a Master’s degree in Social Work), continuously improve my skills through various training courses and seminars, read various academic articles, and, most importantly, I have an innate way of communicating that is essential in social work. I am very happy to see that even a short interaction can positively affect a resident who has been in a very poor mood for a long time. I see how they change, feel no tension, communicate warmly and openly, enjoy various new experiences, confidently make suggestions, and willingly participate in different activities. Of course, I try to improve not only the psychological environment as much as possible, but also the physical one. I am constantly looking for new ideas, and together with the residents we improve and nurture our surroundings so that the home feels cosy and is a pleasant place to return to. I always listen to the residents and try to meet their needs. Seeing their shining eyes is the greatest recognition of my work.”

“Sometimes I feel very tired and exhausted. At such times, I try to meditate, read books, and search online for psychological and philosophical articles. Naturally, society’s expectations of social workers have also increased. I believe this is related to the growing range of competencies required of social workers. On the one hand, this is fair and justified. On the other hand, society expects social workers to quickly solve the complex, long-term, systemic problems faced by service recipients, while the social worker’s own expectations may be limited, and motivation and responsibility for one’s own life may gradually be transferred to the service recipient.
