Getting to Know the Burbiškės Community

As a partner in the Vilnius City Municipality Administration project No. 08.1.1-CPVA-427-16-0009, “Development and Expansion of the Community-Based Social Services Network for Persons with Intellectual and/or Mental Disabilities in Vilnius City,” Valakampiai Social Services Home is participating in the establishment of a group living home for 10 persons with intellectual disabilities.

In order to get to know the Burbiškės community and introduce the newly established Group Living Home at 8 Tunelio Street, we organised a community gathering on July 28, 2021. We invited the future neighbours of the Group Living Home to attend. Mr Mečislovas kindly offered his yard as the venue for the event.

During the meeting with the community, Director Viktorija Grežėnienė spoke about the services, activities, achievements, and staff of the Valakampiai Social Services Home.

The residents of Burbiškės expressed concerns about the future residents of the newly established Group Living Home, the adequacy of their care, and the safety of the local community.

V. Grežėnienė provided those present with information about how services would be provided to the residents of the Group Living Home, how many staff members would be employed, and how the residents’ living environment would be maintained. She assured the community that every effort would be made to provide the best possible services for persons with disabilities and that local residents should have no concerns about their safety. She also mentioned the possibility of organising joint community events.

The residents of Burbiškės expressed a need for a bus stop near their community, as the nearest stop is quite far away, making it difficult for older people without cars to carry their shopping home. The residents also suggested that a small local shop would be very useful for the community.

The meeting took place in a warm and friendly atmosphere.

All members of the community agreed that they wanted to live together in harmony, friendship, and happiness.

During the meeting, we agreed that we would strive to build good neighbourly relations and mutual understanding, and to make Burbiškės a safe, welcoming, and pleasant place for everyone to live.
