Valakampiai Social Services Home Implements Vilnius City’s Sustainability and Green Policy

In order to use energy resources responsibly and efficiently, taking into account environmentally responsible and resource-efficient consumption, current and projected fossil fuel (natural gas) prices, as well as the sustainability and green policy of the City of Vilnius, the budgetary institution Valakampiai Social Services Home, having assessed the available opportunities and economic benefits, decided to participate in the call for applications announced by the Environmental Projects Management Agency for the use of renewable energy sources (solar, geothermal energy and biofuels) to meet the needs of state and municipal institutions, traditional religious communities, religious associations or centres, and non-governmental organisations by replacing fossil fuels.

On 24 August 2022, the institution submitted Application No. KK-AM-KV02-0012 under the above-mentioned call for applications. The application was evaluated and approved, and funding was allocated for the installation of 82.5 kW heat pumps at the Valakampiai Social Services Home.

In December 2022, the Institution implemented the project “Installation of 82.5 kW Heat Pumps at the Valakampiai Social Services Home” at Rukeliškių St. 40. As part of the project, two gas boiler systems serving Building 2 – the Long-Term Care Unit and the Specialized Nursing and Social Care Unit – were converted to ground-source (ground-to-water) heat pump systems. By implementing this project, we contributed to environmental protection and the promotion of overall well-being. The estimated CO₂ emission savings are 39.55 tonnes per year, amounting to 791 tonnes over the 20-year assessment period. The total value of the project was EUR 154,199.98, of which EUR 111,375.00 was funded by the Environmental Projects Management Agency (APVA) under the Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Lithuania from the State Budget, while the remaining EUR 42,824.98 was financed from the budget of Vilnius City Municipality.

It should be noted that the implementation of the above-mentioned project will also provide financial benefits to the Institution. A quantitative analysis showed that in 2021, the Institution’s Specialized Nursing and Social Care Unit consumed 10,764 m³ of natural gas for heating and hot water production, while the Long-Term Care Unit consumed 12,425 m³. The total annual natural gas consumption of these units amounted to 23,189 m³. Taking into account fluctuations and market trends in natural gas prices for legal entities (EUR 3.18/m³ in September 2022), the annual gas consumption was equivalent to approximately EUR 73,741. Following the implementation of the project, the gas boilers in Building 2 (Long-Term Care Unit) and the Specialized Nursing and Social Care Unit were dismantled, and the use of natural gas for heating and hot water production was completely eliminated.
